The Summit I Needed Didn’t Exist—So I Created It

Years ago when I lived in Houston I was having a conversation with my good friend Teeba about dating. I was sharing with him the woes of the men I was meeting. I always saw Teeba as a big brother that gave great dating advice. As we were chatting, He said to me, with complete conviction, “Hill, you’re going to meet your husband at a conference.” I was instantly repulsed. Absolutely not, I told him. “A conference? That’s not where my person would be.” I understood what he meant though—he saw conferences as the kind of place where ambitious, professional people gathered. People who valued growth, learning, networking, elevation. I was all those things. But I also knew what conferences were really like for someone like me. They were boring. They were rigid. They were overwhelmingly white or deeply performative. They were places where professionals felt like they had to put on a persona to fit in and I wanted no parts of it.
Maybe what he was picking up on wasn’t where I needed to go to meet my guy but my need for peer-level connection. A need to be surrounded by people who could see me, challenge me, pour into me, and remind me that I didn’t have to do leadership alone.
Yes, his male perspective mattered. It always does. Masculine energy offers balance, reflection, and insight. But what I didn’t know back then, and what I now hold with clarity is this: My people weren’t sitting in rows at a traditional conference. They were circling up at a summit. A space where Black women like me, leaders, visionaries, builders, could come together and be all of who we are. A space that honors both our power and our vulnerabilities.
And so, I created it.
The Black Women Lead Annual Power Summit was born out of that tension, out of that gap, out of that moment of needing and not having. It’s the space I wish existed back then, and the one I am so grateful exists now. We are now in year three of the summit that will take place at the Moxy Downtown Los Angeles, California and I could not be more excited.
What This Summit Is
This summit is where the red carpet is rolled out for you—the First, Few, and Onlys. Not for what you do, but for who you are. It’s a space to reimagine and unlock what’s already within you. A sacred place to remember that you were born to lead, without breaking yourself in the process. It’s where you come to be inspired, refueled, and reconnected with your purpose. A space to breathe again. It’s a space to be unapologetically Black and beautifully human, surrounded by other Black women who just get it. It’s a place to build real community—where you are no longer the “only one,” but part of a powerful majority. It’s a chance to network across industries, across titles, and across life stories with women who lead, love, and labor just like you. It’s where we unlock solutions to the challenges we face professionally, emotionally, spiritually, relationally, sexually, and physically. It’s where you get to let your hair down and engage in transformative programming without muting any part of who you are. And yes, we tackle the real issues of the times every single year, but we do it in a way that’s joyful, engaging, and sexy.
What This Summit Is Not
This is not your same ole traditional conference. We don’t do cold rooms, dry content, or panels that feel like corporate compliance training. We don’t reduce you to your title, industry, or LinkedIn bio. We don’t expect you to show up as your professional persona and leave the rest of you outside. We don’t overcrowd the space, strip out the intimacy, or silence your joy. You won’t be sitting all day in silence, sipping on bad coffee, waiting for something to finally resonate. You won’t have to sneak away to find your fun. Because here? You get it all in one space. Development and Fun.
If you’ve been craving this type of space that celebrates your complexity, honors your humanity, and pours back into the woman who always seems to be pouring into others, this summit was built for you.
